Bougainville Live Latest News

Bougainville Copper Limited is partnering with a local vanilla exporting company, Mauang Exports, to help build capacity among Central Bougainville vanilla bean growers.

Mauang Exports purchases dried vanilla beans from local growers for exporting to overseas markets and is conducting training programs for farmers from growing through to curing in order to produce high quality beans.

The training started at Darutue Village in South Nasioi and will cover up 25 locations in Central Bougainville. The Darutue session was well-attended by both male and female farmers and training facility Chrisanto Korokoro is expecting good numbers at subsequent sessions.

Mr Korokoro joked that growing vanilla was not rocket science and provided opportunities for families in Central Bougainville to grow it in order to earn some extra income.

He said the training was designed to help farmers to produce the best vanilla possible, so it could proudly carry the ‘produced in Bougainville’ branding.

“We want purchases to be confident that when buying Bougainville vanilla beans, that they are getting produce of the finest quality and that perception will strengthen the brand in international markets,” Mr Korokora said.

“We also want them to know that vanilla beans grown in Bougainville are entirely organic and no chemicals have been used whatsoever.”

During the training session there were good levels of interaction between facilitators and the farmers and it is positive to note that many women are indeed involved in vanilla farming.

The women involved agreed that the free training was extremely beneficial, and they would be keen to take up any further opportunities to develop their skills as growers.
