Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) is a true believer in the power of education and was once again delighted to lend its support to local National Literacy Week activities.
Held throughout PNG, Literacy Week ran between September 2-6 and highlighted the importance of reading and writing and the opportunities that enhanced literacy standards can create.
The theme for this year’s event was ‘Literacy transforms Christian values and education for Melanesia’ with celebrations commencing in Buka and moving through the region to conclude in Arawa.
BCL was proud to be the only corporate sponsor for activities in Bougainville and was pleased to provide funding support and merchandise as well as assist with the distribution of books among local schools.
Company chairman Sir Mel Togolo described literacy as a very powerful enabler that allowed people to more fully participate in everyday life.
“The ability to read and write is fundamental to education and to many areas of employment and life in general. Literacy helps us to gain better understanding and make more informed decisions and choices, which is important for such things as voting in the upcoming referendum,” he said.
“Being able to read and write empowers individuals and opens all sorts of doors to further learning, vocational training and fulfilling careers.”
Bougainville Copper has a long track record of supporting educational and vocational opportunities for Bougainvilleans and is keen to further build on this.
