BACKING FOR TEAM BOUGAINVILLE IN NATIONAL ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) was a very proud sponsor of a team of four talented young athletes who represented the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (ARoB) in the recent PNG Air National Track and Field Championships.

The championships were held at Kimbe in West New Britain between 15-18 November and team Bougainville comprised of Nathan Telly, Laura Ketsana, Lambert Tseroana and Charmaine Buka.

The team’s coach Hubert Hirara said all four athletes are to be commended for giving their absolute best in their respective events and for also displaying great sportsmanship.

Nathan, who attends Devare High School, was one of the stars of the championships winning gold in both the men’s U18 1,500 and 800 metre events. He said performing well against strong competition was extremely satisfying and to be representing ARoB, along with his teammates, made the championships a truly memorable experience.

The general manager of the ARoB Schools Athletics Association Mr Samu Sasama said BCL’s support of these young athletes was certainly appreciated.

“Sponsorship such as this gives our young people the opportunity to compete at higher levels and to make the most of their talents and for that we are most grateful,” he said.

BCL chairman Sir Melchior Togolo said these athletes have set a great example for other young people and the company was pleased to be able to support their well-deserved participation in the championships.

“Athletics and other organised sports are things we as a company like to actively encourage among young people because of their many benefits. Sport promotes both healthy bodies and minds and it also brings people together in positive environments,” he said.

As well as the physical benefits of sport, studies have shown that regular exercise among students and indeed workers can lead to better concentration, memory retention and cognitive processing.
