Bougainville Live Community Latest News

Theresa Jaintong OBE is a name that should be well-known in Bougainville. A highly accomplished leader, she played an integral role in the peacekeeping activity in Bougainville. Theresa has dedicated her time and effort to improving the welfare of Bougainvillean women, setting up clubs to provide training in health, traditional customs in and around the Panguna affected areas.

President of the National Council of Women in PNG, she is responsible for 22 provincial women’s councils. Theresa also sits on multiple national boards, including the SMEC PNG, IPPCC Commission, National Health and Censorship boards. She is also chairlady of Arawa Siokate Loloho Resource Owners Association and an advocate against gender-based violence towards women.

Post-crisis, Theresa Jaintong became a member of the interim Bougainville government and the minister for health. She was heavily involved in mediating peace and reconciliation and attended all the peace talks within Bougainville and internationally. Theresa’s commitment to education and peacekeeping saw her awarded the prestigious Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2000.

Theresa was also a Bougainville Copper Foundation scholarship recipient – the first female student sponsored under the scheme – receiving the scholarship in 1970 to study social work at Ahioma Welfare Training Centre in Alotau, Miline Bay. She made the most of her opportunity, graduating at the top of her class, receiving a prize, and a diploma in social work.

Theresa returned to Bougainville, using her new skills in her home town of Arawa, working for BCL under the community development department. She was based in Dokotonama, Dapera Village, assisting the company when it was in the initial stages of exploration and reintegration of people and villages within the Panguna mine area.

Theresa worked in multiple areas of the company and was responsible for induction of new employees, became a mining training college scholarships officer, through to being responsible for the development, training and localisation of Bougainville Copper.

“My training raised the standard of living and helped improve quality for life living in the multiracial society. It also built bridges among the expatriates and locals to live in harmony and a peaceful environment,” she said.

“I am what I am today because of BCL. It was BCL that gave me leadership training on the job and working under very qualified mentors. The company taught me how to be a leader, giving me management training, at a mine training college. If there was one thing BCL did really well; it would have to be training and localisation of their employees.”
