Bougainville Live Latest News

The following is a speech delivered by Genevieve Itta, BCL’s senior project officer for Panguna, at the launch of Literacy Week activities at Tupukas Primary School in Arawa on 4 September.

Distinguished guests; teachers and students; ladies and gentlemen.

On behalf of Bougainville Copper Limited I would like to express our gratitude for the opportunity to be here today at Tupukas Primary School to support local activities as part of the national Literacy Week program.

Written information is of course all around us and those with the ability to read it, write it and understand it have a distinct advantage over those who cannot.

It is an unfortunate reality that many of our young people are yet to learn to read and write and sadly, the same also applies to far too many adults, including those in their senior years.

Learning to read and write, regardless of age, are very empowering things, as literacy helps us to take advantage of opportunity and to live better and more rewarding lives.

Literacy provides self-confidence and opens all sorts of doors to further learning, vocational training and all-important employment opportunities that can lead to successful long-term careers.

Literacy is a powerful enabler allowing people to more fully engage in everyday life. It helps us to make informed decisions and choices. For example, the ability to read and understand information about the upcoming referendum on independence undoubtedly makes it easier for the literate to participate in this process.

Literacy also provides a means for life-long learning and at a personal level, reading and writing can also be sources of immense enjoyment.

Bougainville Copper has always recognised the importance of improving local literacy standards and more broadly to providing education and training opportunities for Bougainvilleans.

Through the Bougainville Copper Foundation for instance, BCL has provided scholarships for more than 1,300 students since 1997. These have helped young people pursue further education in areas that will benefit Bougainville’s ongoing development.

And in an important new initiative, we are delighted to confirm our support to the ABG Department of Education in the provision of standards-based curriculum training for local primary school teachers.

The move to standards-based education reflects international best-practice and puts in place classroom structures aimed at enhancing literacy, numeracy and overall educational outcomes for our children.

Corporate assistance is essential to the provision of local level teacher training and in this regard BCL is pleased to be contributing more than K80,000 to support training sessions for more than 380 teachers at Kieta and Panguna next school term.

This type of training will help build the institutional capacity needed to ensure young Bougainvilleans will get maximum benefit from schooling in their most formative years. Bougainville Copper is proud to be associated with such a worthwhile initiative.

Our backing for local Literacy Week activities and for standards-based teacher training forms part of our broader Community Investment Program. This will see us support other worthwhile community initiatives in education, health, sport and culture in the months ahead.

As a company, we remain totally committed to Bougainville and we are also optimistic about what the future can hold.

By working cooperatively together we can make a positive difference in the lives of local people in areas like literacy, while at the same time helping to ensure Bougainville is equipped to prosper in the years and decades ahead.

Thank you and all the best for the rest of the week.
