Roka shakes hands with Hon. Gary Juffa, Governor of Oro Province

Bougainvillean author Leonard Fong Roka has been presented with his Crocodile Prize Book of the Year Award at a ceremony at the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby.

Roka is currently studying at Divine Word University on a Bougainville Copper Foundation scholarship. He also regularly contributes to the BCL blog project, Bougainville 24.

Bougainville 24 features articles about Bougainville and BCL activities, especially writing by Bougainvilleans covering a range of topics including the arts, culture, current affairs, environment, literature, education, history and transport.

Roka won the Ok Tedi Mining Book of the Year Award for his book Brokenville.

Brokenville is a memoir of Leonard’s experiences during the Bougainville crisis when, as a youth, he was thrust into manhood due to the escalating violence and chaos around his mountainous home near Panguna.

The book was Roka’s third in two years and he says there are several more on the way.
